Thumb-Sucking & Dummy Use: When to See an Orthodontist

superhero kidThumb-sucking and dummy use are common self-soothing habits in young children. While normal in infancy, if these habits continue too long, they can affect your child’s dental and facial development. So, when should you be concerned and when is it time to see an orthodontist?

When to Be Concerned:

1. Age Matters

These habits are typically harmless in toddlers, but by ages 5 to 7 it is a good idea for parents/care givers to try gentle encouragement to help the child cease the habit.  Most children will spontaneously cease thumb sucking around the time they start school. If the habit continues beyond age 8, it is a good time to book a consultation with an orthodontist because prolonged continuation of the habits can affect dental development and lead to bite problems.

2. Signs of Misalignment

If your child’s teeth are shifting or not meeting properly when biting, the habit may already be impacting their dental development. It is worth noting misalignment may be a congenital and unrelated to the habit. It is therefore a good idea to get a professional assessment done by an orthodontist if you are concerned

3. Speech Concerns

Extended thumb-sucking or dummy use can affect speech clarity. If you notice articulation issues, it’s worthwhile speaking with both an orthodontist and a speech or health professional.

4. Emotional Attachment

If the habit is tied to anxiety or emotional comfort, support from a psychologist can be helpful. An orthodontist can also guide you through gentle habit-breaking strategies that supports your child without stress.

Booking a consultation:

A consultation with Dr Foot can determine whether the habit is affecting your child’s teeth or bite. While orthodontic intervention may not start until 9-12, early assessment can provide you with the pathway forward and help reduce treatment requirements and duration.

If habit-breaking techniques aren’t effective, orthodontic appliances may be recommended. Dr Foot will guide you through the best approach tailored to your child’s needs.
