Getting orthodontic care can feel like a big change, but it all starts with a few simple steps, like your separators. These tiny blue spacers are placed between your back teeth to gently create space for your orthodontic appliance. You might feel a bit of pressure when they go in, but it shouldn’t be painful. We usually slide them in using floss, and they sit snugly to make just enough room to fit bands later on.
Tips for Eating and Brushing While Wearing
During this time, sticky and chewy foods should be avoided – you don’t want to pull the separators out! Think caramels, toffees, gum, or even crusty bread. Stick to softer foods, especially on the first day or two, while your teeth are adjusting.
Brushing should stay part of your routine, but skip flossing near them. Flossing could pop them right out, undoing the work we’ve done.
Here’s a quick care guide:
- Avoid chewy/sticky foods like lollies, gum, and toffee
- Brush gently but thoroughly, twice a day
- Do not floss around the separators
- Take Panadol or Nurofen for soreness if needed
- Call us if any separators fall out early
What Happens Next?
If a separator comes out, let us know. If your next appointment is less than 48 hours away, it’s usually fine to leave it out. But if there’s more time between visits, we may need to replace it.
At your next visit, we’ll remove the separators and fit small metal bands around your teeth. We’ll also take a mould to create your appliance. Then, a new set of separators will be placed to keep the space open until your appliance is ready. These are usually much more comfortable than the first round, as your mouth has become used to them.
