How to Activate Your Fixed Expander Plate/RME

expanderMake It Simple at Home

If your child has just had an expander (also called an RME) fitted, you’ll be helping to guide their bite into better alignment. It might seem tricky at first, but once you know the steps, turning the key becomes quick and easy.

It’s totally normal to feel unsure at first. But with a little practice, most parents find it’s easier than they expected – and your child will quickly get used to the routine.

Step-by-Step Expansion

In the centre of the expander is a small cylinder with three holes. Each time you complete a turn, a new hole appears. That’s how you know it’s working.

Hold the key so the logo is facing up and the tip lines up with the handle. Insert the tip into the front hole until the bend disappears – this means it’s fully in. Now, gently push the key back towards the throat until a new hole appears. Then drop the key down onto the tongue to remove it.

Always check that a new hole has appeared – if not, the turn may not be complete. And if resistance feels unusual, pause and contact us before continuing.

Tip for Easier Turns

The easiest way to expand is with your child lying down on a couch or table, head tilted back. A phone torch can help light the area so you can clearly see the holes before inserting the key.

You can also use a magnifying mirror or ask another adult to assist if it feels tricky to do alone – teamwork often makes things go smoother.

We’re Here to Help

“If you have any trouble with the expansion, give us a call or let us know,” says Dr Riaan Foot (Orthodontist). It’s always better to ask than to guess.

Whether it’s your first time or you just need a refresher, we’re happy to guide you through it. Contact Wavescape Orthodontics today!
