When it comes to orthodontic elastics, position matters – a lot. For Class II elastics, the bottom band should hook onto the second-to-last bracket near the back of your mouth. You’ll see a small hook underneath it. Slide the end over that hook, then stretch it up to your top canine tooth. That’s the first hook near the front, usually marked by a small white or metal tie.
A Simple Way to Put Them On
Rolling the elastic onto your finger first makes application much easier. With it rolled and ready, gently slide your finger towards the hook until it catches. From there, bring it up and attach it to the upper hook.
This trick works on both sides and helps you avoid frustration or losing the elastic mid-way.
Wear Time Makes a Difference
To see results, you’ll need to wear your elastics for about 22 hours a day. Only take them out when eating or brushing your teeth. Even then, roll the band onto your finger and set it aside so you remember to pop it back in straight away.
The first few days might feel uncomfortable; your jaw may ache or feel tight. Panadol or Nurofen can help during this adjustment phase.
Consistency Keeps Braces on Track
Class II elastics play a big part in how long you’ll be in braces. Stick to the schedule, and your teeth will move as planned. If you wear them inconsistently, it could drag out your treatment timeline.
