What is a Twin Block Device?
When beginning orthodontic care, your oral health professional may recommend a twin block device to help align your teeth and jaw. This removable appliance consists of both upper and lower pieces designed to work together.
How Do You Insert the Device?
Placing your twin block correctly is straightforward but orrequires attention to detail. For the lower piece, align the device with your teeth, positioning the clasps over your bottom front teeth. Apply gentle pressure until it clicks fully into place, focusing particularly on the back portion.
The upper piece follows a similar process. Line it up carefully with your teeth, ensuring the front bar sits across your top front teeth. Apply pressure at the top of the appliance until you feel it secure with the clasps wrapping around your back teeth.
Best Way to Remove the Block
Removing your device requires specific handling to avoid damage. Never pull from the front bar of the appliance. Instead, use the clasps located at the back of the device—that’s precisely what they’re designed for. Place your finger over these clasps and push gently to release the appliance.
Cleaning and Maintenance of Your Device
Maintaining good hygiene is simple. Use a manual toothbrush with cold tap water to clean the appliance thoroughly every morning and night when you brush. Toothpaste isn’t necessary—cold water provides adequate cleaning.
Getting the Best Results
For optimal results, wear your twin block full-time, including during sleep. The only exceptions are:
- Eating meals
- Brushing your teeth
- During playground activities or breaks
When not in your mouth, your twin block should immediately go into the storage box provided at your appointment. Ensure the box is completely closed. Avoid wrapping the appliance in tissues or napkins, as this often leads to accidental disposal or damage from pets. If you’re concerned about safekeeping during school hours, consider giving your storage box to a teacher during breaks.
