When you decide to improve your smile with clear aligners, you’ve made a great move toward a healthier, straighter set of teeth. But wearing them the right way is key.
Inserting Your Invisible Appliance
Start by lining them up with your teeth. Press them into place using your fingertips—first the front, then the back—until you feel them clip in snugly. Repeat for your top and bottom sets.
Every time you reinsert them, use the green rubber chewies. Place one near the back, bite down firmly, and roll it from tooth to tooth. This helps the aligners grip more tightly and encourages steady tooth movement.
Following the Schedule for Proper Wear
Your aligners only work if you wear them, so aim for 20-22 hours every day. Only take them out for eating, brushing, or drinking anything that isn’t water. If not in your mouth, they should be stored in the provided case, never wrapped in a napkin, where they can be lost or thrown away. And if you have pets? Keep the case well out of reach.
How To Keep Your Trays Clean
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and cold water to clean them gently. Don’t use toothpaste; it can scratch. If you notice buildup, drop a Polident or Steradent tablet into a glass of cold water and soak your aligners for 15 minutes.
Tips and Things You Might Expect
- A slight lisp or more saliva is totally normal and temporary
- Soreness? Try Panadol or Nurofen if needed
- Change aligners as advised; usually every two weeks
- Keep your last set in case you need a backup
“If your aligners don’t feel quite right or you lose one, let us know. We’re here to help,” says Dr Riaan.
