Wearing Them the Right Way
If your orthodontist has recommended box elastics, you’re entering the next phase of fine-tuning your bite. These small rubber bands are a key part of many treatment plans, but only if worn correctly and consistently. When skipped or worn irregularly, they can delay progress or lead to discomfort.
Step-by-Step Placement for Best Results
Each elastic connects four teeth to create a rectangular or “box” shape. Start by hooking the band onto the bracket on your canine tooth—the pointy one just beside your front teeth. From there, stretch the band back to the first molar (second-to-last tooth) and hook it over the bracket. Repeat the process for the opposite side.
The elastic should form a box shape across your upper and lower teeth. It might feel a bit snug at first, but that pressure means the band is doing its job.
The Importance of Wear Time and Care
Unless told otherwise, you’ll need to wear your elastics full-time. That means all day and overnight, removing them only when eating, brushing, or flossing. Once finished, put them back in immediately.
Skipping even a few hours here and there might not seem like a big deal, but it can really set your progress back days or even weeks.
