Guidelines for Maintaining Oral Hygiene With Braces

good oral hygiene

Wearing an orthodontic appliance means you’ll need to boost your daily hygiene routine. Whether it’s your first time or you’re familiar with how these devices work, consistency is key to keeping your mouth fresh, clean, and comfortable.

That includes brushing properly, handling your appliance carefully, and knowing what to do when it’s not in your mouth.

Cleaning Things the Right Way

There’s a tiny expansion key and cylinder that works like a mini gear system. It may sound tricky, but it’s simple once you get the hang of it. Insert the key into the front hole and gently push it back toward the back of the mouth. This will rotate the cylinder and expose the next hole, proving the expansion is complete. Dr Riaan Foot (Orthodontist) will tell you exactly how often to turn the key.

Proper cleaning is just as important. Use a manual toothbrush with cold tap water. Soapy water is fine too, but don’t use anything hot; it could warp the material. Never soak it and always store it in the container provided when you’re not wearing it. Avoid wrapping it in tissues or napkins, which may lead to accidental damage or loss.

School-Friendly Tips for Kids and Teens

If you’re wearing your appliance to school, be prepared to take it out during lunch and recess. Pop it into the container and keep it in a safe spot, either in your bag or with a trusted teacher. The last thing anyone wants is a lost or broken appliance. But if that does happen, let us know immediately so we can help sort it out.
